Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is one of the South of England’s best visitor destinations offering a complete maritime experience, all year round.
Visitors can discover history at the home of world-famous ships, HMS Victory and HMS Warrior 1860; walk through fascinating exhibitions at the Mary Rose Museum and the National Museum of the Royal Navy; test skills at the interactive Action Stations and take a Harbour Tours boat trip around Portsmouth Harbour and Naval Base. Whether interested in naval, military, industrial or social history, architecture, culture, or just a way to keep the kids occupied, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is an ideal destination.
Near to Southsea Castle and situated on the Clarence Esplanade, the D-Day Museum was opened in 1984 commemorate the 40th anniversary of the D-Day landings, a pivotal event of World War II in which allied troops arrived in Normandy to liberate Europe from the Nazi barbarism. One of the numerous artifacts hosted at the museum is the Overlord Embroidery, which is regarded as a modern version of the Bayeux Tapestry.
As Britain`s tallest structure open to public access, the Spinnaker Tower affords superb views over the city of Portsmouth, the Solent and the Isle of Wight and is open 364 days a year.
The Portsmouth City Museum hosts the famous exhibition: Study in Sherlock, which belongs to the Lancelyn Green collection of 40,000 items relating to Sherlock Holmes that were given to Portsmouth in 2004. The museum also hosts a temporary exhibition and Decorate Art Gallery.
Located at the Grand Parade in Old Portsmouth, this church was founded back in 1212 originally as a hospice which was used to shelter foreign pilgrims visiting Winchester, Canterbury and Chichester. The church`s Nave was bombed in January 1941 and remains roofless as a memorial to the dark months of the blitz.
Built by the famous Lord Palmerston back in the 1860s and once part of Portsmouth`s defences, Fort Nelson is located in the north of the city on Portsdown Hill. It provides free entrance to large numbers of Royal Artillery, including more than 350 cannons and guns.
Tourism South East recently voted this aquarium the top visitor attraction of the year, which is located on the Clarence Esplanade along Southsea`s seafront and is close to the D-Day museum.
Gunwharf Quays is a large, attractive entertainment and retail complex redeveloped from the HMS Vernon site, at Portsmouth Harbour. This centre offers a bowling alley, a multiplex cinema an excellent range of bars, restaurants and designer shops in walking distance to cheap hotels in Portsmouth
